To our friends in our Charlottesville Community, When Heather and Dani purchased rock paper scissors almost 15 years ago, they were two young whippersnappers ready to make their mark on the stationery and wedding industry. We are so incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished: from being a strong shopping staple on our downtown mall to multiple features in national magazines. The best part has been the people: bearing witness to the hundreds, if not thousands, of life events of our clients (weddings, growing families, and even death—all move us in some shape or form). We have partnered with a wide variety of organizations in our community from schools and nonprofit organizations (such as the CASPCA and The Paramount) to Martha Jefferson Hospital and Friends of Downtown, and have donated countless hours as well as dollars for good causes. We've had our "ups," like childbirth (no really, it’s a great story if you haven’t heard it: Dani was in the operating room with Heather when Wes was born!); and our downs: surviving Dani’s diagnosis of breast cancer at age 30; August 12 and the C'ville heart; not to mention staying afloat during a pandemic (you know, just some little things here and there…), but we've weathered the storm. It's been our privilege and our honor to be a part of the fabric of this incredible community. You have built us up and supported us in return, and we are forever grateful and humbled.As much as we’ve loved creating and growing RPS with all of you, we know it is time for a new visionary to take the helm. It is with a full heart that we would like to introduce you to the new owners of rock paper scissors, come January 19th: Karen and Jonathan Ward. The Wards recently relocated here from Northern Virginia, where Karen spent over 6 years working at a stationery store, so she knows the ropes! It’s time for fresh energy and leadership to guide RPS forward. Karen's passion for pens, paper, and exceptional customer service aligns perfectly with the values we hold dear at RPS. And you may have seen her around the shop already, as she has been getting to know our bridal and stationery clients for the past two months. You will still see familiar smiles from the RPS staff (and we couldn't have done most of this without them, major kudos to our team!) your favorite paper products and RPS' stationery expertise and guidance in motion. PART-TIME RETAIL SALES POSITION WE ARE PRESSING PAUSE ON HIRING UNTIL THE NEW YEAR!! Rock paper scissors is seeking a highly motivated, part-time sales associate (with big-time impact!) to join a close knit retail environment. Must be people-friendly, organized, able to multi-task and willing to work some Saturdays. Retail experience and/or an affinity for paper a plus! Tasks include: - day-to-day retail activities such as checking out customers, answering questions about products, processing end of day paperwork, etc. (it is retail, after all) - unpacking, entering (aka data entry) and stickering new product shipments (feels like your birthday opening so many packages) - merchandising shelves, restocking store displays and occasional front window installation (get creative) - social media posts and marketing content generation for e-blasts (photography skills a plus!) - occasional gift wrapping (bring on your martha stewart skills) - store maintenance, including tidying, wrangling garbage and recycling, occasional vacuuming and light cleaning (if we had magical powers, we'd eliminate this, but alas we can't.... but many hands make light work) - processing custom orders, including meeting with customers*, creating detailed schedules and estimates in order to help manage clients' timelines and budgets, and advising them on best practices (read up on Emily Post! and don't worry, we'll train you on this) 20 - 30 hours / week available, with 2 Saturdays a month commitment necessary. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE WEEK DAY AVAILABILITY. Pay starts at $15 / hour (assumes College Degree or working toward one) with opportunities for a $1 pay raise once trained on custom stationery (typically about 6 months in), and another $1 pay raise once trained in wedding invitation appointments (typically at about 1 year), plus additional raises thereafter based on merit. No health care benefits, but flexible vacation time. Thanksgiving and the holidays are our busiest time - please do not apply if you leave the area during these times. Vested employees have Simple IRA options and 5 PTO days, plus generous in-store discount. *Full training provided. Note that, once trained, you will be expected to be able to conduct hour long meetings for stationery and other non-wedding invitations and announcements (birthday, showers, etc.) (this typically happens for stationery by about 6 months); and wedding meetings often last a full 2 hours (training typically completes around 1 year). Given the heavy amount of time we invest in training, our hope is for a longer commitment (2 years min) to working with us. Serious applicants only need apply.
